Overview
The summer internship position starts with an induction event, where I found out about the firm - culture, values, and structure of my placement etc. This was followed by a placement in the business in the audit service line where I did some basic work in the financial statements - profit and loss account and balance sheet items. I was included in meetings and there were social events also which were great. There were also social events with the interns
Skills
During the placement I learnt a lot about how business works, and more about the organisation. This helped build my knowledge and research seen during the application process. The main skills I demonstrated were problem solving, communication, team work and others. It was great working with new people both in the firm and also getting to know some of my other intern starters. All the people were friendly and made me feel very welcome throughout the placement
Responsibilities
Yes overall I would think that I was given good responsibility during my internship. I was given projects to work on by myself and I enjoyed the responsibility of doing this. I was given lots of support and the teams around me helped answer my questions and understand what I was doing and why it was important. I was also working in team projects and the work I was doing was similar to what other graduate starters were doing.
Support & Guidance
Yes - I was given a lot of support and guidance during my internship. The work I was doing was new to me and although I understood the basics of audit before the internship, everything was explained to me and complicated work areas were made clear. This was very helpful and I was pleased with the amount of support I was given. I was also provided a buddy support who was very helpful all the time
Culture
The culture and atmosphere in the firm was good. I was made to feel part of the team and there was a fun atmosphere between the interns which was great - I made lots of new friends who I have kept in touch with afterwards and will hopefully start with. The firm was supportive and welcoming. I was given lots of information and help before starting and the culture seemed to be generally really friendly and welcoming.
Your Impressions
I would say looking back, that I enjoyed the placement from start to finish. The induction event made me feel at ease and I was given lots of help and support - in my work and also with things like using my laptop and using the applications needed for my work. The people were really nice - my colleagues in the teams and also with the other interns. I enjoyed the internship, and learnt a lot about the firm and work I was doing.
Yes
I would definitely recommend applying to the firm to a friend. I have told friends about my placement and how much I enjoyed it. I would say to others to look at the kpmg corporate/careers website and understand as much as possible about the company and the work that is done. I learnt a lot whilst doing the internship but it was helpful having some knowledge before starting. I would recommend applying and doing the internship.
