Overview
My role is a software engineer in Oracle Contextual Intelligence meaning that most of my work involves developing tooling to aid the classification of text and video content. Working in a small agile team means there is the opportunity to participate in agile practices such as pair programming. There are also daily standup meetings along with bi-weekly planning, retro and review sessions that aid in my development.
Skills
I have learned so many new skills whilst at Oracle in my placement year, including both technical and soft skills. Some examples of technical skills are new programming languages and frameworks e.g. Golang, and React; DevOps tools such as GitLab CI; containers (Docker, Kubernetes); and much more. Soft skills I have improved include my presentation skills through presenting in sprint reviews, communication skills through taking part in team meetings.
Responsibilities
From the very first week of joining Oracle, I was given the opportunity to take full ownership of any tasks I worked on. I was given the privilege of working on production systems and creating software that is used in day to day operations of the company and used by customers.
Support & Guidance
At Oracle, I received a great amount of support throughout my placement, having two mentors from the moment I joined for the whole year. I also had weekly 1-1s with my manager where we set goals and checked in on my progress. Tech leads in all of the teams I worked in were always very supportive and more than happy to answer any questions I had.
Culture
The atmosphere was very positive, and you could tell everybody who works inside Oracle contextual intelligence is happy with their role and the culture of the company.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would jump at the chance to return to Oracle in the future due to how successful I feel my placement has been.
Yes
The main piece of advice I would give is to research what the part of Oracle does that you are applying for - Oracle is a huge company who are in so many different sectors across the world. Having some prior knowledge of what you would be working on not only helps in interviews but also if you join the company.
