Overview
My day to day responsibilities have been very diverse though out my placement. Ranging from designing and conducting stress analysis on floodgates, civil structures and pipe networks to scribing Hazops to constructing and populating data sheets and reports to doing research on market disrupting technologies such as hydrogen and etc.
Skills
New skills - I was introduced to a software that is used to design and conduct stress calculations on pipe networks. Developed skills - Gained a lot of confidence in professional communication by conversing with clients and fellow employees around the globe frequently. There is a clear improvement in my CAD skills. Arup also has numerous courses that has helped me expand my knowledge in hydrogen, water, energy, infrastructure etc.
Responsibilities
During my first few weeks, I was given very light work but as my team gradually understood my capabilities I was given bigger responsibilities later on. Such as composing and distributing reports to clients, contacting and setting up meetings with clients, carrying out calculations and models designs etc. In almost all the projects I have been involved in, I can see my work being reflected in the final outcome of the project.
Support & Guidance
All my work that have a significant impact on the projects are always reviewed or monitored by a senior member in the team. My team members are very quick to respond when ever I have a query and they always make time to give assistance. This support is not only seen in projects but also for activities outside of work. Arup also runs programs and societies to provide such support at a larger scale.
Culture
Everyone you meet or speak to is very welcoming. There is no superiority complex, I have had conversations with directors which are no different to the ones I have with fellow interns. Arup constantly run interactive programs to further develop this atmosphere. There are very active societies and groups that represent the LGBTQ community, minorities and gender equality. You will always find a social event happening every month, especially amongst the grads and interns.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my internship enough to extend it to a summer placement. I tend to spend most of my days in the office as there is a very sociable environment. Social events are very occasional and has a very good turn up. The work I have been doing also aligns with my engineering passions. So much so that I have decided to collaborate with Arup for my final year project. I would most definitely go back as a great if the opportunity arises.
Yes
The key to enjoying your work life at Arup is to be sociable. Make sure you make the most out of the friendly environment Arup offers as well as contributing to it. Try not to be glued on to your screen all the time. Talk, network and collaborate. Have the same attitude in your interview. Arup values your ability to connect with clients and employees to build strong relationships.
