Overview
I was given a lot of responsibility, even in my first few months as an intern. I had deadlines to work towards and my work involved reaching out to the wider project team, as well as working internally within the mechanical team. I can't disclose any project specific details but the work was generally around weight reporting, Bill of Material management, some CAD design, drawings etc.
Skills
I've developed my general awareness of the aviation industry after working on the design and delivery of the systems. Generally my CAD skills have improved, I've learned how to use PLM systems, and other software. My inter-personal skills have improved massively after working with so many different people from different parts of the business. There are opportunities for training courses as well, however most of my learning was on the job.
Responsibilities
I was given a key role within the project from the beginning of my placement. This involved many project critical deadlines, and a lot of the wider project team relied on my work. Interns play a key role at GE Aviation, so you will no doubt be given meaningful tasks as long as you show interest and put in the effort.
Support & Guidance
My manager changed at the start of my internship, and my team lead also changed around halfway through, but this didn't affect the support I received. The mechanical team are great and will help you out as long as you ask questions and seek out their help. The role is very much seen as a developmental role for you as an intern, so support is always available.
Culture
Company culture and atmosphere is good, the site is huge so there's a lot of events going on all year round, lots of volunteering opportunities etc. As I am a Muslim I didn't attend any social events at pubs etc, but I did not feel that this impacted me negatively in the workplace. I didn't come across any local diversity initiatives, but the wider GE company does run events of this kind.
Your Impressions
I've really enjoyed my placement, the work has been fulfilling, the team I've worked with have been great, and I've learned so much in the 12 months. I would definitely go back to work for GE Aviation in the future.
Yes
