    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I work to support the running of the pilot plant. I have conducted equipment trials, led capital projects, supported commissioning and completed calculations to assess safety and operational aspects of processes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my technical knowledge through my projects and observing work taking place in the department. I was invited along to observe many meetings and physical projects which I learnt a great deal from. I have also developed many of my soft skills, particularly interpersonal skills, self management and communication skills. There were many workshops for soft skills development also that I was encouraged to attend.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given projects to work on that were important for the running of the plant and was able to lead many of these projects, including a capital project, with support from my manager and other colleagues where necessary. I knew when to ask questions and where to go for guidance to support me but was trusted to oversee and work on my projects myself.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had regular meetings with my manager who would discuss my work and give me guidance but always asked how I wanted to approach starting a new project. They were approachable and always helpful. I had a buddy who I had regular meetings with. The whole department was always willing to support me, everyone was approachable when I asked for guidance or just wanted to learn more from them.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • We were still under COVID restrictions at work for the majority of my placement so social evens were limited. However, some were arranged virtually and in person later in the year. They are colleague resource groups you can get involved with. All the undergraduate are added to a Facebook group prior to starting, this was a great way to meet others - we all have lunch together.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement year because I was able to get involved in a wide variety of projects. I learnt and developed a lot over the year. I also really enjoyed living by the coast!

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Pfizer
  • Take time to complete the application form and answer the questions well. But beware that Pfizer recruit for this role very early. Prepare for the interviews by understanding the STAR technique. Be yourself.
