Overview
Reviewing and recovering items of metadata (documents which inform us about the methods and scenarios by which we collect data) relating to a selection of the Met Office UK Land Network, and from this compiling station histories, with a quality assurance perspective. Also contributing to production of tools for analyzing the data in a time series such that we can identify homogeneity (discontinuities in the data).
Skills
Yes I have definitely improved my computing skills, presentation skills, improved my problem-solving/analytical inference. I have also learnt a lot about stakeholder management, cross-sector collaboration, independent working, time management and have taken many opportunities to learn other meteorological training as part of my personal development.
Responsibilities
Yes I largely have worked independently and have been relied upon to provide summaries of my work to groups of interested colleagues. There has been lots of flexibility but I have always felt that if needed I can reach out to any member of the team for advice and support.
Support & Guidance
In the first few weeks I received lots of support, with a thorough training schedule already lined up to help me and the other placement students into the company. I had lots of opportunities to meet colleagues and gain training and advice. There was lots of flexibility to the working process however I received lots of advice during frequent meetings to help things progress in the desired direction.
Culture
The company is very people first, by which I mean people are encouraged to pursue their interests in order to achieve the most which they can, which in turn benefits the business.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my placement very much and have been humbled by the array of opportunities it has brought me. My only wish would have been that I could have spent more of it with the team in person, as COVID prevented me moving to Exeter. It should also be borne in mind that the Quality Control team are actually based at the Edinburgh Offices. Working in an office is surprisingly fun and encouraging and I would have liked to have seen more of that side of the business culture.
Yes
Go for it, they are a great company to work for!
