Overview
Arranging and tracking the transportation of Cummins shipments via a logistics Control Tower. This involves emailing freight forwarders for quotes and updates to relay to the customer / requestor. Usually there are between 40-55 shipments under our remit which all have the be tracked daily. I am also responsible for presenting the monthly transport review for each UK site - this involves mode analysis by weight volume and spend, CO2 analysis, market forecasting, performance and general commentary.
Skills
Excel skills, interpersonal development (how to communicate with external parties and people from around the globe), confidence in presentations and meetings, knowledge of global logistics
Responsibilities
Yes, being responsible for up to 5o shipments is a big task. I have also had to work on projects that have a tight deadline and that also are needed for improvement of data reporting (ie dashboards). My role is independent but we have to coordinate as a team to get the best results
Support & Guidance
Lots of support - a months training / handover period from the previous student. Managers always willing to help + external freight forwarders always eager to help me learn about the industry. There was also the Cummins Learning Centre where i could develop my skills
Culture
We have daily meetings so, despite WFH, i talk with the team on the daily basis not just about work. We have to volunteer during our placement and help the community in which we are based
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed being part of the team, and the work i was carrying out. I would return to Cummins as they are a great employer
Yes
Be flexible and open minded to do any task that gets you involved - every day is a learning day. The staff will always understand that you are new / inexperienced so don't be afraid to ask questions
