Overview
Product management is a cross-functional department, so I have gotten to work with people across the organisation as well as on various projects. My day-to-day tasks involve: conducting competitive analysis, evaluating data sets (e.g. product cost breakdown), creating product presentations and product announcements, assisting with pricing, assisting with the maintenance of product health metrics
Skills
I have improved my self-confidence, analytical skills, decision-making, time management and prioritisation. Also, with Cummins being a global company and my colleagues being all over the world, my resourcefulness and ability to come up with creative solutions myself have certainly improved too. Furthermore, I have gained market insight and technological knowledge on gensets, engines etc over the course of my placement.
Responsibilities
During the first month, I had mostly training sessions, so I didn't naturally have much responsibility back then. However, as I have gone through my placement and showed my capabilities, I have kept getting more and more responsibility. The good thing though is that my manager or colleagues have been always there for me whenever I needed advice or had some questions.
Support & Guidance
I had lots of training sessions and get-to-know meetings during my first month. Later, when I started properly working, I have always been given support/guidance from my manager or colleagues whenever I needed it. I have never gotten told off when I needed help - everyone has always been super welcoming and willing to help. Also, there is an opportunity to enroll in training sessions on multiple things throughout the year.
Culture
Cummins has an amazing culture, and everyone truly lives by its values. People are always friendly, willing to help/answer any questions, strive for excellence, and most importantly caring! I have never experienced a situation when I needed any guidance and was told 'no'. Also, the other amazing thing about Cummins is its corporate responsibility projects which show how Cummins is a really caring and people-oriented company.
Your Impressions
I have had an absolutely great placement experience! My manager & the team are incredibly friendly, caring and knowledgeable people from whom I have had many opportunities to learn and welcomed me to Cummins quickly. There are many opportunities which I had a chance to join in terms of work but also social. I have also enjoyed the flexibility and diversity of my workload.
Yes
Don't be shy; it's really ok to ask questions or ask for help when needed, and just be yourself!
