Overview
In the Electro Optics group I build on existing models which are used for research purposes. I also partake in lab experiments using new equipment and sometimes even go on trial. On a day-to-day basis, I would be adding to a model, writing up documents defining my changes, working in the lab on some new cameras/equipment that were recently ordered in and help prepare admin for any upcoming trials.
Skills
I have learnt how to code in Matlab and I've developed my teamwork and confidence with presentations - especially technical ones.
Responsibilities
I was trusted to get on with a piece of work and it was expected that I would ask for help if I needed it. I was also responsible for leading a research study during my placement which involved delegating and assigning small pieces of work to other departments.
Support & Guidance
I was given lots of support throughout. More at the beginning but as I worked my way through the placement I felt more comfortable with less support however it was always there if I needed it.
Culture
The general atmosphere was close and everyone was very friendly. I felt safe in the department because I knew that there was always someone I could ask for help on whatever problem.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I knew I was doing interesting and meaningful work and I had lots of support from my manager and the wider team.
Yes
Don't be nervous during the application process. They're not necessarily looking for the correct answer but engagement and desire to learn and improve.
