Overview
I worked as the PR and Communications intern within the Kiehl's Brand Engagement Team. Day to day tasks included creating and scheduling daily content for the local Social Media Channels, creating reports for both paid and organic media, conducting competitor insights analysis, saving down coverage and fulfilling influencer send-outs. I was also responsible for leading in-store shoots to capture any additional, relevant content. The role ensures you work closely with the wider Marketing Team.
Skills
I've hugely developed my communication and presentation skills, as the team encouraged me to present in strategy meetings and work closely with my seniors, meaning I was pushed outside of my comfort zone. I've also harnessed great analytical skills through conducting reports and competitor insight analysis. Additionally, there are regular learning courses made available to you so you can really make the most of the placement.
Responsibilities
Short answer - Yes. My role was much more than just admin heavy tasks. I was responsible for organising charity fundraisers, leading in-store shoots/liaising with production agencies, creating monthly content plans and much more. The role is very rewarding in the sense that L'Oréal give you a lot of autonomy and don't shy away from putting you at the forefront of multiple exciting projects.
Support & Guidance
I received a great deal of guidance during my placement. We had a very useful onboarding fortnight where you met your closer and wider team. The requirement of filling out an intern map form at 3, 6 and 12 months ensured we always knew what our KPI's and goals were, and were constantly receiving feedback on how we could improve our performance.
Culture
My team was great. Those in more senior roles were always friendly and approachable. There is an intern team that organise social events, and we were always included in wider-team/company events too. We had an intern whatsapp group where people set up clubs, e.g. 'social netball'. There's also a great sense of Corporate Responsibility, which is important.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. However, it's important to understand that the company is fast-paced and you will certainly never find yourself short of work. If you're looking for responsibility, and to improve your skills in a short period of time, and if you're good at working under pressure, then the opportunity is ideal. I would definitely return after University if given the chance.
Yes
It's important to be very detail-orientated in the application process, checking spelling, grammar and thinking strategically. It's also crucial, however, to be your most authentic self - bring unique opinions and insights to the table. I'd recommend practising psychometric tests and looking into the roster of brands that L'Oréal own and their key values.
