The Role
Excellent industrial experience. Working as a Design engineer at Cummins really opens your eyes to the exciting world of market leading engine design in a corporate business environment.
Colleagues at Cummins treat you like a valued employee rather than a university student. The work set is of a high standard and you are expected to perform at a level equivalent of graduates and engineers.
Management were a fantastic support, sending me on relevant training courses for the job and always willing to lend a helping hand for anything I may have struggled with. Career guidance and support from experienced employees and even senior management was very inspiring and encouraging.
The job was very demanding and my project supervisors expected an extremely high standard of work from me. As a result I was generally very busy and also due to my job role I had different problems to solve almost every day.
I was given quite a high level of responsibility during my placement designing a range of engine components and given ownership of the design work. The work I was responsible for however, was supported and guided under supervision to ensure I was going in the correct direction!
The training, skills and general working life understanding gained on my placement were great. I feel refreshed and confident going into my final year of study. I feel I have become much more professional on my outlook on life and this will help me in my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere at Cummins is extrremely friendly, very multicultural and diverse and generally fun. The nature of the business ensures that the workplace must be serious however, people are always willing to have a chat, help out or just simply have a laugh during a break from work.
The placement was well set-up coordinating all the placement students across all functions to work together on several activities. Initially I felt a little confused as I did not actually know the department I was in or who my manager was until my first day of work. It would have been useful to have got some information about the role I was starting before my placement.
The company invested a great deal in me, through training and personal development. Cannot fault it.

The Culture
Lots of fun to be had, good student social atmosphere. Social events across the company were also well attended and great fun.

Decent. Enough places to go to have a good time!
