The Role
I had a excellent time during my placement at Cummins, I was given a broad variety of tasks enabling me to gain exposure and understanding of a real multi-national organisation.
I have been treat like any other employee, but colleagues have also understood that I have no industrial experience and have helped me settle in and gain understanding of the role.
I had a weekly one-to-one with my manager which was used to review projects, tasks and was a chance to discuss any queries I had.
I was given a wide range of tasks and there was always opportunity to get involved in more tasks.
I was given full level of responsibility to run tasks alone when I was confident to do so. I was given the opportunity to lead projects and co-ordinate project teams without supervision.
I learnt and devleoped a great deal whilst on placement and my manger ensured that I had the opportunity to do so. Real industrial experience varies greatly to degree studies and will greatly assist in my employment in the future.
The Company
I worked for the Distribution business unit, but due to geographical location was hosted in another site in Darlington next to employees who travelled frequently, meaning my area was often quiet. In Darlington there were other students and a general friendly atmosphere.
I was the first student with the Distribution business unit, but all colleagues accomodated this, helping to offer me tasks and providing me with the opportunity to train and review my progress.
Cummins provided me with two additional training opportunities. Each of these involved travelling to other site locations and meeting other employees. The training was a good opportunity for me to develop and was suited specifically to my role.

Working from home
Getting a job within Cummins would be a fantastic opportunity, due to the size and setup of the company there are many opportunities for different roles and progression.
The Culture
The Darlington site where I was based had many other placement students and graduates. This meant that various social events were organised.
The cost of living was fairly average.
Darlington is a town and is not a large town, but there is still a good social scene and good nightlife.
Yes - there were various social events organised and other activities including charity events.
