Overview
Developing utility tools to interact with the tool suite using a REST API and support review improvement process by producing a prototype solution. Daily tasks involve programming, testing, and documenting. We worked in an agile environment and followed planned work in iterations lasing about three weeks. Often attended meetings (at least twice a week) to speak about progress of work within both my sub team and larger team.
Skills
I have been introduced to web development, a field I had tried to learn earlier but didn't have the time. This involved learning new frameworks (Vue.js, Express.js) as well as new languages (TypeScript, JavaScript). Being exposed to meeting with customers, attending meetings, and hosting demonstrations has helped me become more confident, resulting in my presentation skills becoming a lot better.
Responsibilities
A lot more than I was expecting. I had been tasked with developing a new web application to host our tools on. Initially this was a project only I worked on - but it became a major product and more developers joined the team. I was asked to demo this for customers (sometimes by myself). I've also worked directly with customers (by myself) to develop custom Python scripts automate a feature of the tool suite
Support & Guidance
Support was super. Worked with a small sub team, meeting twice a week to discuss work and any issues we were facing. Met at least once a week with the larger team where we could bring up any larger issues we were facing. I had weekly one to one meetings with my people manager where I could speak about any issues I had faced, technical or non technical.
Culture
Within the team, the atmosphere was very relaxed. We'd often have off topic conversations before a meeting started. GE offered multiple opportunities to socialize with other employees, some included volunteering and hosting an employee appreciation day. There was definitely a push to improve yourself and your skills. I'd been sent documentation about avionics to read as I'd expressed interest in the area previously, and offered training sessions in other subject areas
Your Impressions
I've very much enjoyed my time at GE Aviation. Being allowed to develop my own skills, learn some new ones, and volunteer to help school students during a weeks work experience on multiple occasions has been a welcomed pleasure and has exceeded my expectations. I'd jump at the opportunity to come back.
Yes
Be yourself and show your passion and interest through your interview process. I found that GE is interested in you as a person just as much as they are interested in your technical skills. Day one is always scary, but the people leaders are incredibly welcoming and make the transition super smooth.
