Overview
My role involves finding digital solutions to solve client problems and to meet client requirements. I have been given the opportunity to work on all aspects of the UX design process, meaning every day is different. For instance, I could conduct some user research or discovery for a client on one day and on another day I am redesigning a landing page or conducting accessibility reviews. At times I don't feel like a placement student at all as I feel like a respected and valued member of the UX team and the company as a whole. Thank you MMT!
Skills
Not only have I learnt new skills at MMT, but I have also developed and extended the capabilities of my existing skills. Learning UX design at university isn't the same as having hands on and practical experience with real-life clients. The main skill I have learnt at MMT is how to liaise and communicate with various stakeholders involved in the UX design process. This includes project managers, engineers, product owners and the clients themselves. At university you don't learn how to communicate with these stakeholders and meet their needs in an agile and lean manner. Therefore the MMT UX design placement has provided me with opportunities like these which will be invaluable for my future career.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement. Within the first six weeks, I was invited to client meetings and workshops. With the support of UX design leads at MMT, I was given the opportunity to work with some of our biggest clients. For example, I was involved in a two-day client hackathon where I was the sole UX design representative for MMT on my team. I worked directly with the client to design a digital solution to a problem they were facing. Not only that, but I also pitched our solution to both internal executives and client executives, some of which were based in the United States. Although this was a challenging experience I learnt so much and it helped me to be more confident in my capabilities.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my placement. Firstly, when you first start as a UX placement student, you are eased into your role through a placement project. This involves designing and implementing a digital solution to an internal problem MMT are facing with the support of a UX design mentor. The other placement students are also involved with this along with their respective line managers. This gives you the opportunity to learn more about your placement cohort but also to learn how things are done at MMT. Once you complete this placement project, you are placed into live client project with the support of your line manager and mentor. You will also have weekly catch ups with your line manager to discuss any problems or concerns you are facing. However as you develop your skills and you are more comfortable working on these projects, your contact with your line manager will ease. However, they are always there to support you and provide guidance whenever you need. My line manager [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was amazing, he has supported me throughout my placement regardless of whether I have issues within or outside of work. Overall, you will be supported and you will never feel lost. But always ask for help if you need it as if not everyone will assume you are okay!
Culture
I would describe the company culture as open and extremely welcoming. We do like to have fun at MMT as we all love what we do. However, at times it is very fast paced and challenging which is a part of agency life. During such times we are very serious about the value and quality we provide to our clients, but we like to have fun with it at the same time. I can reach out to anyone in the company at any time and they are always happy to help. If you are lucky enough to be based in the London office, it has a buzzing and exciting atmosphere as we share an office with other agencies within the MSQ group where you can meet other like-minded creatives. Great atmosphere!!
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it thoroughly, I do not regret completing the placement at all. It has provided me with so many opportunities which I never received at Univerisity. I feel so integrated with MMT and it will always have a place in my heart. I know after my placement I will be involved with MMT in some capacity as I have met so many great people who have helped me in ways I cannot imagine. I can't thank MMT enough!
Yes
It is a bit of cliche but I would say just be yourself. At MMT everyone is authentic and ready to learn. We may not know everything and we may not have all the skills necessary to solve a problem, but its the willingness to learn and challenge assumptions which make you an MMTer. As long as you showcase your passion and willingness to learn when you apply you will be in a great position.
