Overview
Assisting in structural engineering building projects. This involved completing structural analysis and design calculations, producing drawings, analysis models, calculating embodied carbon etc.
Skills
I've improved my 'engineering thought', meaning I have a better idea of what looks right and wrong. I've also greatly improved my drawing skills, and have a much better appreciation for the business side of engineering.
Responsibilities
Yes, whilst still being supported, I was given very important tasks which required lots of responsibility. I led various presentations to the group and clients too, representing the company.
Support & Guidance
Lots throughout; I was always encouraged to ask questions, and made to be aware of the network of people I had around me to help.
Culture
Given the huge size of the office, it's impossible to meet everyone. Also, given that COVID measures were still in play when I started, it took months for me to properly make friends and see people. I respect Arup's care regarding COVID, but I know that my course mates completing similar internships at other companies had far more social outings and a more family-like atmosphere in the office.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot, I think I made some good friends and I've certainly learnt a lot.
Yes
Be honest in your application, and don't be too worried that you won't know things. In my interview, I felt that I was being questioned as much on my character and values as I was on my engineering understanding. Regardless of how much you know from uni, you'll end up learning 99% of what you need to know on the job, and the hiring team recognise that.
