Overview
In essence, this role revolves around constant problem-solving. As is common with any product/service offered to customers, they don't always work perfectly. As the Fleet Supply Undergraduate, your primary job is to rectify the issues being experienced by our fleet customers - regardless of the intricacies. You're also responsible for the invoicing of these products/services, whether its from the supplier to VWFS or from VWFS to the customer.
Skills
Because contact with customers is constant throughout this role, my communication skills have developed massively. The need for professional communication is paramount due to the nature of the issues you'll be discussing with customers. My problem-solving skills have also developed exponentially throughout the year, because its a primary component of this role. Finally, my IT skills have improved, especially with Excel - but I've also been exposed to other useful systems, like SAP.
Responsibilities
Even early on in my placement, I was responsible for a number of important processes. Throughout the year, these continuously increased in number. For example, during the third quarter of my placement year I took on a number of invoicing processes originally completed by multiple members of a finance team. I was then responsible for training my immediate colleagues on this before my departure from the company at the end of my placement.
Support & Guidance
A strong support network was always present throughout my placement. Due to the nature of some of the queries I had to deal with, oftentimes I would work directly with my colleagues to reach a resolution more promptly. Likewise, I would often collaborate with other team members to help them address the queries they were dealing with - or assist them with processes they were completing.
Culture
The company culture was inclusive and offered a fairly relaxed working environment. Formality, punctuality and professionalism were all expected, but especially within my immediate team, formality wasn't always necessary during our internal interactions. It's apparent that you're working for a large corporation, but it doesn't feel overwhelming.
Your Impressions
Although it wasn't exactly what I expected it to be, I enjoyed my placement year and feel as though I developed a lot throughout my time at VWFS. Both hard and soft skills were necessary to perform well, so they both definitely improved a lot. I'd describe this placement as a hybrid of logistics/supply chain management, customer communications and the financing of these suppliers offerings, as well as VWFS's.
Yes
It may seem obvious, but despite still being a part of Volkswagen, this is a finance company, so at least in this role, its a lot more finance heavy than some expect. Nevertheless, there's a vast array of different roles, some of which are very finance heavy, some of which aren't. Just make sure your clear on the difference between Volkswagen Group and Volkswagen Financial Services before you apply.
