Overview
I spent three weeks sitting in two different practice areas. In addition to legal drafting, my work included researching, writing an article, proofreading, cross-checking documents, taking meeting minutes, contract review, and a variety of other tasks. The insight also included social events, networking opportunities and presentations given by lawyers in the firm on their different practice areas, which gave a broader insight into the work of the firm beyond the my two seats.
Skills
Yes, I have developed my existing legal and professional skills and developed new skills. For example, I have learnt how to adapt my style and tone to suit client-facing work and format my work appropriately. I have developed my drafting skills by working on legal documents that I was previously unfamiliar with. I have also gained knowledge of client communication and case management by observing how other lawyers within the firm approach their work.
Business Insight
It was useful learning about how the firm is structured and the different roles available other than the trainee associate programme. I particularly enjoyed seeing what type of work paralegals undertake as this is something I am considering doing in the future.
Culture
The firm has a very positive culture. Everyone I met was friendly, approachable and very generous with their time. I was struck by the firm's genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives and particularly their pro bono legal work. I feel that the firm is somewhere I would very much like to work in the future.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the vacation scheme, both on a personal and professional level.
Yes
I would advise that you learn as much as you can about the firm before joining and take real advantage of any networking opportunities. In my experience, HSF lawyers are genuinely happy to give advice and guidance to aspiring lawyers.
