Overview
I was involved with the day to day work of the planning team which included conducting research, looking at historical planning applications, observing client meetings and industry update calls, writing cover letters and writing planning statements.
Skills
Yes. The experience was invaluable in giving me an insight into the day to day work of a planner. I improved my analysis and appraisal skills as well as my research skills. I learned a lot about the planning system on a practical level.
Responsibilities
Yes, the team gave me responsibility on the projects they were working on and trusted me with confidential client information.
Support & Guidance
I always received in depth feedback on the work I had done which helped support my work throughout the placement. I was also invited to take part in a day-long workshop in the office with the RTPI. Through the summer scheme, I also gained a huge insight into the breadth of work that Savills does across all divisions.
Culture
Very friendly. I was invited to networking events, trips to the pub after work and introduced to other members of the office outside of the planning team. Felt like everyone was supporting each other with work.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the placement very much
Yes
Show your willingness to learn and apply any transferable skills you have. I didn't have prior experience in planning or property, but demonstrated how my skills would be beneficial to the team. In my application I also talked about what I wanted to get out of the scheme.
