Overview
I shadowed a Senior Associate within Audit, and was introduced to various members of staff, from Associates/Graduates, to a Partner. Along with 2 other interns, I attended a catch-up meeting, learnt about how Audit projects are run at PwC, and was taken through a financial statement, learning what the Senior Associate I was shadowing was doing on a day-to-day basis. I was taken on a virtual office tour where I learnt what life/culture is like in this company.
Skills
Having not come from an accounting background, I learnt a huge amount about the audit industry, including seeing the software PwC uses to carry out its auditing projects. I gained confidence in building relationships within a corporate, professional setting, and was exposed to the real culture at PwC. I was given the opportunity to ask current members of staff questions about their experience and career thus far, and their goals for the future, giving me a clear idea of what my career could look like.
Business Insight
The information I was given was audit specific as this is the area of the business I applied to, but we also had a talk from a member of staff in the PR department to see what working in the London office is like. I learnt from an eclectic range of people with different paths into their current roles, giving me an interesting insight into all the different ways you can have a career with PwC.
Culture
Very good - it was clear the people-focused culture PwC advertises is true. I asked various members of staff what their favourite thing about working at PwC is, and a large majority answered that the social aspect of the job was a highlight. In my experience, the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly, and each member of staff was enthusiastic about answering questions and encouraging us to join the firm. The Senior Associate I shadowed was approachable and chatty; I felt at ease straight away.
Your Impressions
Going into this insight week, I was hoping to gain an insight into what working at PwC is really like, and I feel this expectation was definitely met. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to work in corporate before participating in this programme, but I can see how a career at PwC would be enjoyable and rewarding. The company culture is friendly, however, I did sit in on a meeting where the staff weren't aware we would be there - they were friendly, but it was uncomfortable to have to introduce ourselves and explain why we were there.
Yes
When applying, do your research; concentrate on demonstrating the 5 core values PwC has. Look into your chosen industry, and work out why you want to apply for it, and why you've chosen PwC specifically. Show enthusiasm and friendliness, and try to create relationships with any live interviewers you have. During the insight week/any internship, don't be afraid to speak up and let your voice be heard. Participate in meetings and show you're eager to learn/build relationships.
