Overview
On a day to day basis, I would run experiments contributing to the development of CGT assets. I also ran experiments to develop my project for the year creating a new method of analysis for CGT assets. My role consisted of a lot of troubleshooting experiments and running them again till the desired results were acquired. I would then analyze the data and write up reports for my experiments.
Skills
I learnt a whole new set of skills both technical and non-technical. Skills such as time management, teamwork, organization, communication, and more were developed on a daily basis through meeting new people, meetings, and working collaboratively with other co-workers. Technical skills I developed were data analysis, report writing, and developing my skillset with PCR systems (ddPCR and PCR).
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility for my placement from the get go. You have to use a lot of your own initiative to get work done. I also had my project for the year that I had a lot of responsibility with creating and developing experiments to run. It felt as if I was a normal employee, which was extremely rewarding
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance from my manager, other placement students, as well as my co-workers. GSK's culture is amazing and everyone was extremely nice and understanding. Everyone wants to help and if you ask for it, people will help you out!
Culture
It was really comforting and extremely nice. GSK's culture felt like a family and I felt so comfortable from the get go. Everyone really wants to help you out and push you for success.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement a lot. I gained a lot of new knowledge and skills that will help me throughout my career. There were things that I enjoyed and I didn't enjoy. It also expanded my horizons to new careers and roles that I would have never known unless I did my placement. Despite the ups and downs, it was an extremely rewarding experience
