Overview
On a day-to-day basis the scheme offers students a real look into the workings of a law firm. The Gateley team was extremely welcoming and helpful. You are given a variety of tasks to take on as a vacation scheme student including proofreading contracts, share purchase agreements, residential sales contracts, drafting reports on real estate searches, doing some legal research, etc. The tasks are varied and extremely fulfilling.
Skills
I have most definitely developed new skills and continued to build existing skills. I think the most important aspect of being a vacation scheme student is the time management which goes into the schedule. You will be given a lot of work, have workshops and seminars provided by the firm, as well as attend networking events. To be successful you really need to be organized.
Business Insight
The team at Gateley are extremely welcoming and open about the business and the structure of the company. If you have any questions about roles, promotions, how to build up your career in the company, they are more than happy to talk to you about it. Not only this but many senior Partners are more than happy to sit down and talk through a task or assignment with you.
Culture
The culture is very interesting at Gateley and something which I haven't seen before. They prioritize inclusivity and diversity like no company I have interacted with yet. Their employee wellness is a top priority for them and have many assistance programs/networks which they offer. You learn about all the various initiatives they put on in their communities and the charities which they align themselves with.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight very much. It was practical experience in a firm, which allowed students the opportunity to network with all parties in the firm. It was also great to be able to put some law school experiences to real life work.
Yes
Get stuck in! Network, make friends with the trainees, don't be afraid to ask Partners for work or help - everyone is more than happy to help you. Come prepared with many questions and I would recommend making sure you have a general overview of the sector which you will be in for the week (even though you will get work from around the firm).
