Overview
Project management and engineering work, multitasking to work on several projects at once. leasing with customers, suppliers and production to meet deadlines.
Skills
Lots of scope for development in the role, I have progressed as a mechanical engineer, particularly in CAD and Ideation. I was also able to learn more about pneumatic and control systems while also completing some electrical engineering. Generally I developed my professional communication, knowledge of business function and visibility of the SMT industry as a whole.
Responsibilities
This department in particular relies on placement students to function, this means you are given a lot of responsibility from day one. This is great for your development and progression however dealing with customer deliverables and working to meet deadlines can mean a lot of pressure in peak times which can sometimes feel a little overwhelming.
Support & Guidance
The Mentoring scheme here works very well you have weekly meetings with you mentor/ manager to discuss any issues and your development as well as regular meetings with HR. There is a month change over period between the old and the new students allowing you to learn off of them. Even before you start the company is in regular contact to ensure you are ready to start.
Culture
Friendly and helpful atmosphere, you can normally find someone in the business who is willing to help. It is also very welcoming when you first start. Good culture with team building days, social clubs and a dozen students a year there ae a lot of activities organised outside of work. Very busy time for the company putting a strain on a lot of departments.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my placement a lot. I have developed immensely in just a year and feel that my year in industry will greatly support me when looking for graduate positions. I discovered that providing customer deliverables was a great motivation for me and enjoyed working in a close knit team, the only downside to this would be the added pressure that comes with this. I felt like a valued member of the business and like the company responded to the students feedback on a regular basis.
Yes
Show a passion for engineering (or your discipline) in your application, anything outside of your degree that you enjoy will give you an advantage.
