Overview
My role is a design consultant, working on delivering projects for different clients. Some day to day tasks include: • Generating user flows • Low to high fidelity wireframing • Conducting user research • Playbacks with senior stakeholders & clients • Identifying pain points & creating to-be maps • Imagining personas • Work with visual designers to bring designs to life and create design systems
Skills
I have developed a variety of soft and hard skills over this year. Hard skills include: - Wireframing - Basic front end developing - Using a design system Soft skills include: - Communication - Presentation - Time-management
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility in my year - I had the opportunity to directly work on deliverables that were being sent to the client or being developed. I often got the chance to present my work to the clients and get their feedback. I always felt like an essential part of the design team.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support throughout my year - not only from my task manager but was also given a foundation manager to help me set goals and make sure that I was learning and training throughout the year. The foundation manager ensured I was doing good in terms of pastoral care and task manager made sure I was working on meaningful projects.
Culture
As a whole - the culture in the subsection of IBM I worked for, iX, is really lovely. Everyone is very supportive and always happy to help you grow if you are willing to learn. People are lovely and always happy to have a chat, the atmosphere makes working here really fun.
Your Impressions
I had a really good time this year, made some good friends and had the chance to learn from so many talented designer. I really enjoyed myself and feel very lucky to have worked with so many interesting and cool clients.
Yes
As a designer applying to IBM, my biggest advice would be to focus on the process. Make sure you talk about how you get to your design decision and show your thinking behind it. For a non-designer, I would advise you to be honestly yourself as that is what they want to see - they love to work in teams full of diverse personalities.
