Overview
Welcoming the students every morning as they arrive into school, speaking to them as they wait outside or in the library for the school day to start. Going to different students lessons within the day, sitting with them and supporting them with their classwork as well as keeping them focused and ensuring they are not distracting other students. Going to the students form classes, having small conversations with them and asking them about their day.
Skills
I have developed my communication skills as I am able to adapt conversations depending on the role and age of someone in the workplace. Futhermore, I have developed my team working skills. This is because I work within a team of 5, we support each other daily with tasks and work. In addition to this, I have developed my confidence. This is because I have taken the leader role as I work with my students.
Responsibilities
I was given responsibility of the students I work with to ensure they are attending their lessons throughout the day, making certain they are completing the work and supporting them with their emotions and social development. Having the responsibility of reporting any safeguarding concerns.
Support & Guidance
During this academic year, I have received a lot of support by the City Year staff. When I first joined I was extremely nervous and anxious however, the staff were very supportive and kind. This encouraged me to continue with this opportunity. Also, whenever I have any struggles or worries I know I can speak to a supervisor to receive the right help. As well as the staff helping me with my possible future aspirations.
Culture
There was no awkwardness in the atmosphere when I first joined the programme, it was as if I was there for years. In addition, the company culture is very calm and kind. The staff are absolutely amazing, they go out of their way to support you and make you feel comfortable and involved. Also, there is a huge focus on maintaining positive mental health. This has been very useful throughout the year, such as LACY days and mental health days.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed every single day during this placement year. It had its ups and downs however, there is always a positive side to a bad day. My placement has mostly been a fantastic experience, I have had many opportunities up for grab as well as the consideration of my mental health. I have created amazing bonds with staff and students, also with the City Year Supervisiors.
