The Role
I was very happy with my placement, it gave me a strong insight into the world of big pharma
As an intern I was treated as a member of the department. We were invited to all work functions and felt like family.
My supervisor was excellent. She was always helpful and despite her workload, always found the time to help me. The management recognised my hard work and were quick to acknowledge my accomplishments.
I had a weekly schedule of which some weeks were more busy than others. I found that I had a perfect balance as I would schedule my activities prior to the start of business.
I was given complete responsibility and was in charge of several assays and reported the data directly to the team leader. I was also completely in charge of my project and received no external help.
I believe that the skills I have learnt will help me regardless of what career sector I end up in as they are transferable skills. Laboratory-specific skills have come in very handy for university.
The Company
Very lively atmosphere with social meetings and lunching together as a department. We also had a social day to commemorate hard work and ended up going for newmarket horseraces.
Very well structured placement where the management team knew exactly what roles each student would have.
There were a large number of courses available to us, this included I.T. and lab-specific courses. Some courses were compulsary and some were optional.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
There are few vacancies but the department is undergoing restructure which makes employment unlikely at this stage.
The Culture
The students were very social and there were several parties with other placement students.
Quite expensive as stevenage was very close to london and so the prices were quite high.
Few pubs but very expensive.
Several departmental functions and department sports teams.
