Overview
I sit within the 'Bridges and Civil Structures' team in the Cardiff office. My work over the last year has been extremely varied, ranging from writing up calculations for large multidisciplinary projects, presenting to clients in external meetings, and taking part in multiple site visits including bridge inspections, structural investigations of several weirs and sluices, and ground investigation condition surveys. I have taken a 'hands on' role in designing retaining walls and a steel channel beam, as well as during the assessment of existing and proposed bridges.
Skills
Working on several different projects at Arup has certainly developed my technical skills, in particular bridge and retaining wall design, and I have learnt the process of inspecting structures and what to keep an eye out for whilst on site. I have also enhanced my proficiency using software, including Oasys AdSec and GSA, Rhino, AutoCAD, Maccaferri Macstars and Bluebeam. Presenting during internal and external meetings has improved my communication skills, as well as boosted my confidence presenting in front of large audiences.
Responsibilities
I felt a valuable member of the team from the very first day. From the outset, I was given meaningful tasks to complete, albeit under close supervision, that had real impacts on the wider projects. However, as my placement progressed, I did notice an increase in responsibility regarding the amount of work handed to me, as well as the opportunity to work more independently. Saying that, anyone in the team would be happy and available to expand on the required tasks, provide guidance on the way forward, and to answer any queries that I had.
Support & Guidance
On introduction to Arup, I was assigned a ‘buddy’ and a supervisor that helped with any queries and to give advice throughout my placement. From my experience, however, any member of staff within Arup was more than happy to assist with queries in any way possible. This resulted in a supportive network and a friendly working environment which made me feel at home from the very first day. Additionally, Arup have developed a ‘Welcome to Arup’ SharePoint page which is full of helpful links and practical information for new starters. I found this resource extremely supportive and insightful.
Culture
Several social activities were organised throughout the year, ranging from team specific to office-wide events. In general, these were well attended by members of the bridges team, which allowed me to get to know everyone in the team and develop good working relationships. Sustainability and diversity are at the heart of everything done at Arup. ‘Sustainability’ and ‘EDI moments’ are held during each weekly resource meeting, which spark discussions and notifies leadership of any actions. There are also numerous sports clubs within Arup, although due to the pandemic, they are only now starting back up again.
Your Impressions
I believe that my year in industry has been such a worthwhile experience for me. I have had so much fun getting my hands stuck into so many fascinating projects and have gained invaluable experience that I will be able to take back to university, and beyond. The Cardiff bridges team were so welcoming and friendly, and I have learnt so much along the way. I would 100% return to Arup as a graduate as my year in industry has exceeded all prior expectations.
Yes
As interview preparation, make sure to research the company and identify Arup’s core values, as well as Arup projects that you find interesting and can mention during the interview. During the placement, do not be afraid to ask questions! From my experience, problems are solved much easier and quicker when you ask for advice/guidance from members of the team as soon as you get stuck. Also, never turn down an opportunity to present. You will gain invaluable presenting experience, and it is something nice to look back on after your placement.
