Overview
A three week internship, with one week as a Nationwide (+Dubai) office induction. The first week consisted with a Induction talks mostly from very senior partners of the firm to explain the values, practice and sectors that DLA work within. The 2nd/3rd week involved working within a practice group, where trainee work was given and further insight sessions from practice areas. We conducted an assessed presentation and written exercise in addition.
Skills
You understand the role of the trainee, through conducting legal research, writing client call memos, and formulating client emails. It helped to improve the skills of writing in a formal and client focussed way. We also gained the skills of networking and meeting colleagues through workshops.
Business Insight
Given the internship is three weeks, it really gives you the chance to understand what DLA stands for, its targets and its wide depth of practice areas. The partners you work with in the 2nd/3rd week really take the time to explain what their role entails and what the department are aiming for in the future which plays into how us as young professionals will slot into the environment.
Culture
Despite the high performance environment, I experienced a very inclusive environment where employees were very happy to take time out of their day to go for coffee and explain their role and understand more about me. That obviously reflects in the culture of the firm where it is collaborative and open. There is also a sense of optimism and enthusiasm within the firm for the current work being done and the future prospects.
Your Impressions
Very much enjoyed the insight into the firm, as was able to learn a lot about the firm but also the firm could really understand who I am. I was able to be myself and comfortable throughout.
Yes
Just be yourself throughout the process, from the assessment centre to the actual internship, because that is where you can really settle which shines to the early careers team. Also stay calm and not overdo your personality and stress.
