Overview
Daily tasks for interns are similar to the tasks that trainee solicitors are asked to do. Depending on which practice area of the firm you are in, you will be required to carry out legal research, legal drafting, due diligence and taking notes on client calls. You will have lots of interaction with fee-earners at all levels, as well as potentially with clients.
Skills
Yes I have definitely learnt new skills and developed my existing skills. Time management and organisation has been key to the role, so I've definitely developed those skills. There has been a large focus on your written and verbal ability as well as your attention to detail. It will be a good opportunity to develop your commercial awareness as well.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given high levels of responsibility from the outset. I assisted fee earners on tasks which were client facing and had real world implications. You get exposure from several areas to the business and are expected to stand on your own two feet from the beginning (although there is plenty of opportunity to ask lots of questions).
Support & Guidance
You receive an excellent level of support and guidance from the moment you secure your internship, right up to the end of the internship. You are partnered with a trainee solicitor buddy who will be there to answer any questions and help you get prepared. You also have a supervisor each week of the internship who is a partner - so it's a great opportunity to learn from them!
Culture
The company culture and atmosphere has been exceptional. It is a friendly, laid back environment with a strong people focus. There is also a lot of emphasis on diversity and inclusion and you see how much it means to the business.
Your Impressions
I've thoroughly enjoyed it!
Yes
Brush up on your commercial awareness (read business / financial publications) - this will help with the application process; know the business inside-out, and most importantly be yourself.
