Overview
The first week involves a number of introductory talks and skills workshops to get to know all of the interns at the UK, Dublin and Dubai offices. The following two weeks are spent in two week-long placements in teams within the firm. Within these weeks you get involved with real cases and work and are assigned a line manager who is a partner within DLA Piper.
Skills
Through undertaking a group presentation I developed my presentation and public speaking skills, as well as adapting to work with new people. Every day you are developing your commercial awareness and professional skills by working within the team.
Business Insight
We received talks from a number of the International Group Heads and senior members of DLA Piper which gave us insight into different areas of the firm (HR, Pro bono etc) not just the legal practice groups. Due to the nature of an internship the discussion of potential roles is focused on becoming a trainee at the firm.
Culture
The culture of DLA Piper was exactly how it had been described - friendly, approachable and full of people genuinely wanting to help you succeed. This is a rarity in a firm of this size but in every department people were willing to talk and give you their time. The firm get involved in thousands of hours of pro bono work and has great diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Yes
- Be yourself. They are not looking for the traditional, purely academic applicant. - Dress in formal business wear - Prepare questions you genuinely wish to know the answer to for a q+a - You do not need to study law to apply - You've got to push any nerves aside and just approach people for a chat within your team
