    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Although no two days are the same, there are certain tasks which you perform routinely as an Executive Assistant. For example, attending meetings (many of which you organise), taking notes, and providing research for Partners of the business. There is also the chance to help support client projects, either full-time or on a more part-time basis. There were also a lot of 'giveback' opportunities; helping at inclusivity roundtables, and mentoring A Level Students.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have become much more proficient in the whole Microsoft Product Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc). You will also learn about storytelling and how/why your powerpoint should tell a story and make the audience feel something. I became much more organised as a result of my placement, and much more confident in presenting and talking to Execs, something which is expected by most Managers during your placement. Mentorship really helped develop my soft skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility right from the start of my placement. I was given ownership of internal processes which Associate Partners/Partners relied upon to ensure their teams were correctly staffed and funded for client projects. I helped to organise and deliver several Innovation days which showcased IBM's capabilities to clients. I also co led a Bid Excellence campaign which aimed to improve the internal transparency/efficiency of our bid efforts.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support during my placement, especially from my two Task Managers and my Foundation Manager. I also made sure to form some working relationships with Mentors from different areas of the business to improve my technical knowledge. For the Intern2Grad application process, I was assigned a buddy who was really helpful in answering any of my questions regarding which practices I should reapply to. I never felt there wasn't someone who I could ask for help or advice.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is very welcoming, especially for an intern. IBMers all seem genuinely interested in one another's background and how they came to work for IBM (especially as there is an array of degrees/qualifications). Practices and Clusters organise social events and this has increased since the move to the new office, 20 York Road. Interns usually work in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday being popular for after-work drinks.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement as it was a great introduction to what consulting and the world of business are like. Consulting, especially in Tech, is very team orientated, and that is something I really enjoyed being a part of. The company culture allows interns to pursue a range of interests over the year, with everyone being very open to offering advice and mentorship. I have applied back with the hopes of returning as a grad!

  • 7. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • Having an interest in technology is key. You don't need to be a coder etc just have a point of view and interest in something e.g. tech in healthcare, and be able to have a conversation with someone about it. Also, have an understanding of what IBM's current strategy is, some current projects they are working on. Showing you are open to learning is key
