Overview
It was a three-week internship. I spent the first week on a global induction programme alongside fellow interns. The second week was spent in the Employment seat of the firm and the second week was in the Litigation & Regulatory seat. Day-to-day tasks included drafting emails, reviewing documents, attending meetings and conducting legal research. There were also opportunities to attending networking events during the day and networking dinners.
Skills
I have learnt several new skills such as writing a memo following a client meeting and conducting legal research on complex matters. Skills developed have included writing in a concise manner, attention to detail and email composition. Furthermore, my networking and presentation skills have been developed in addition to softer skills such as teamworking.
Business Insight
My understanding of the business has developed to a great extent. Moving around different departments in the firm and networking with lawyers at the firm has expanded my knowledge of the potential roles and opportunities available. My knowledge of the firm's culture has also improved by being able to work in the office with fellow interns, lawyers and employees within the firm.
Culture
The company culture values being collaborative, bold, exceptional and supportive. These key values have been brought to life by working in the office. The general atmosphere was extremely friendly and the culture fostered the encouragement for more junior employees to approach senior lawyers for a discussion or to ask questions about work set.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the Summer Internship. It has confirmed my wish to train to be a lawyer and more specifically, train to be a lawyer at DLA Piper. The quality of work, extra-curricular opportunities, culture and facilities form a firm that clearly values its people extremely highly.
