Overview
Excellent internship. Involved in completing a variety of tasks for real clients and matters, such as attending meetings, writing attendance notes, completing company and conflict searches, and drafting witness statements for pro bon cases.
Skills
Yes, developed drafting skills when writing up attendance notes, reports, and witness statements. Also further developed summarisation and analytical capabilities through reviewing finance terms, articles of association and incorporation, etc. Learning a lot of new legal terminology and skills in implementing energy and infrastructure projects and ensuring the enforceability of contracts.
Business Insight
Lots of talks with global sector heads helped achieve an excellent understanding of work the business operates at a regional and global level, and the roles associated with that work. Working in departments also gave great insight into the duties and responsibilities of every level of the business, and how best to progress in those roles.
Culture
Great culture - values intrinsic to the work and departmental sprit of the firm. Lots of employee networks and benefits. Atmosphere open and civil. Lots of director/partner accessibility, and a freedom to ask for help and advice from anyone on the team.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it greatly - the best one I have been on. I would definitely recommend to others wanting to enter a career in law.
Yes
Research the firm and be open-minded about which areas of the firm you would like to practice in. As a business oriented law firm, read up on and acquire a good working knowledge of finance and business before applying - this will help you greatly in the assessments and when working in department.
