Overview
In the two weeks in your chosen office, you sit in two different practice areas and have a supervisor who, along with the rest of that team, welcome you and give you work. The work is really interesting (and real) and you get given the chance to learn a lot. Your day will also be taken up with connecting with various members of DLA - grabbing them for a chat or a coffee and asking them questions.
Skills
I have developed skills in commercial awareness, writing different types of legal document to different audiences and general confidence in working in an office environment.
Business Insight
It was really interesting to learn how the firm works itself as a business, particularly because business insight and acumen is a big selling point to clients. There are a lot of different roles within the firm and it was interesting to see how all the different teams interact and communicate to facilitate the overall workings of the firm. We attended daily talks from leading members of the firm who explained the structure of the business which was really insightful.
Culture
The culture was something the early careers team/managing team stressed as a selling point of the firm. When you actually get into the teams, you understand how accurate this is. All teams were immensely welcoming, everyone in the office knew each other and were friendly and encouraging. There was no one who wasn't approachable.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot, everyone in the firm made it really easy to relax and enjoy the time. It's a long time to feel like you're being assessed, but a lot of people at the firm have been through the same journey and are more than supportive and encouraging. You are very well looked after by early careers and by everyone working there - even if you discovered you didn't like commercial law, working at the firm in general is enjoyable because of the people and culture.
Yes
Be yourself - it's said time and time again but you won't know if you truly fit in somewhere/want to work there unless you are your true self. If you are an enthusiastic, good person who works hard then you will fit in at DLA Piper.
