Vacation Scheme Student Review

During the week we received numerous talks about the different teams at Gateley, with associates or partners provided detailed insight into what their department does within Gateley. We also had a meeting with the CEO of the company who talked about Gateley's history and outlined his vision for the future of the company. During the week I completed three research tasks for tax and restructuring and was introduced to some of the key concepts in both departments. I also did a significant amount of work on a security review for restructuring.

I had never conducted a security review before, and the opportunity to do this work definitely enhanced my attention to detail, as it was crucial to spot any small errors as they could have drastic effects for our client. Further, I worked on a group project over teams, which helped develop my team working skills, especially with a technological element. The research tasks enabled me to develop my skills in efficiently finding key information from legal sources and summarising this information in a concise and easy to read manner.

The information on the different teams and their roles within Gateley was comprehensive, and it was made very clear what the role of the trainees within each team was. I definitely feel better informed into potentially making seat choices if I were to be offered a training contract and as to what would be expected of me as a trainee. There is only one potential role available currently, which is that of a trainee or potentially a paralegal, but I would have to make a separate application for that role.

Everyone in the company was extremely friendly and approachable, and I felt welcomed and at ease from the moment I arrived. There were numerous social events organised for the vacation scheme students, which presented an opportunity to get to know partners, associates and trainees on a more personal level. I was very well looked after during my time and felt that any questions or complaints I had were taken seriously, and that the company as a whole were keen to ensure I had the best possible time during my placement.

I have really enjoyed my time at Gateley and think that the information provided has been helpful to my development as a professional. I have enjoyed meeting new people and learning from their previous experiences, as well as the opportunity to spend time with them in a less formal setting at the socials. The work I have been set was enjoyable, and the only real downside was that working in a small team I was left alone for one of the five days.

I would advise anyone applying to Gateley legal to try and be themselves as much as possible during the interviews. I appreciate that it can be difficult to show your personality whilst staying professional, but I think it is something that Gateley really value. Further, I would advise people to ensure they are well read on the different business within the Gateley Group, such as Gateley Hamer and Gateley Capitus and as such, how Gateley differs from other law firms.
