Overview
The vacation scheme involved me assisting lawyers in two different departments. On a day-to-day basis, I came into the office, completed assigned tasks of various difficulty, caught up with trainees and other lawyers for a coffee break/lunch and worked on the pro bono project.
Skills
I learnt how to be proactive and take initiative when facing challenging tasks. Instead of waiting for my trainee to be free, I searched for the relevant manuals and tried to understand complex topics on my own. I improved my attention to detail when doing document review and drafting. I also honed networking skills during socials. I further improved teamwork skills when working on the pro bono project.
Business Insight
It was very exciting and motivating. I learnt about the firm from presentations and by talking to trainees, associates and partners. I also learnt that the firm offers many opportunities for career progression, promotes a friendly, collaborative and inclusive culture and champions diversity. That further convinced me to pursue a career with Baker McKenzie.
Culture
The culture was friendly and collaborative. Everyone was keen to help me and made time in their busy schedules to speak with me. They were genuinely interested in getting to know who I am. The firm also felt very diverse. Pro bono work and corporate social responsibility are at the core of the firm’s culture, as exemplified by the pro bono project that I undertook as part of the vacation scheme.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the vacation scheme. I felt like part of the team from day one. I got to know many people while getting insights into different practice areas. In terms of work, that ranged from admin tasks to more challenging assignments once I have proven myself capable of doing more basic things. The firm entrusts you with a lot of responsibility if you are capable and keen to learn on the job.
Yes
The key is to be yourself. There is no particular type of a Baker McKenzie lawyer. Importantly, you should know why you would like to work at a big international firm like Baker McKenzie. You should try to research international deals and be on top of current developments in the commercial world. Lastly, think about what skills would make a successful corporate lawyer and seek to develop them before applying.
