Overview
Embedded within the Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) Team, working in a Process Technologist role providing first-line technical expertise in the manufacturing process of Sterile products. Tasks involving process development, management of product lifecycles, technology transfer, technical writing, root-cause analysis, technical risk assessments and much more. In addition to this, completion of my trainee pharmacist portfolio to meet the competency requirements as outlined by the GPhC to enable registration as a pharmacist in the UK.
Skills
Yes - developed my knowledge on the pharmaceutical industry and gained a better understanding of the role of different functions, mainly focussing on where pharmacists are embedded. In addition, compiled a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate development and ability (at a "Does" level of Miller's triangle) for learning outcomes and competencies outlined by the GPhC in four defined domains; "Person-centred care and collaboration," "Professional practice," "Leadership and management," and "Education and research." Also became confident and competent in technical skills such as document writing, ability to provide technical advice regarding the manufacturing process of the product I was involved in, and developed critical and analytical thinking skills through the likes of writing rationales and root-cause analyses.
Responsibilities
Yes - large focus on accountability and ownership throughout. Good progression in terms of level of difficulty of tasks and projects to meet my level of knowledge as time progressed. Plenty of opportunity to be independent when completing tasks but also a sufficient level of support available if necessary.
Support & Guidance
Support and guidance was plenty throughout and very accessible. Team members, my line manager and designated supervisor were readily available and very supportive throughout my placement and very knowledgeable in their fields and gave clear and concise explanations where required. Routes of escalation were clear as well.
Culture
Company culture and atmosphere was good. Staff generally friendly and approachable and the work environment was great.
Your Impressions
It was a challenging but enjoyable placement. I learnt a lot about the role of pharmacists within the pharmaceutical industry and was able to develop my skills within a technical role while fulfilling the requirements to complete my pharmacist training year. The projects were very interesting and it was amazing to be able to work in a modern and innovative manufacturing environment and seeing novel methods for product development etc.
Yes
Great place to work, go for it! You never know what you do and don't enjoy until you actually try it for yourself!
