Overview
Role was within the Centre of Excellence team which specialises in the audit of tax, pensions, and share based payments. Basically, these parts of each company's audit will be assigned to the CoE from the front line audit team and will see the CoE carry out the audit in these areas. It saw me shadow a different member of the team for each week of my internship.
Skills
Have learned several new skills. These include analytical skills by working from actuarial reports to link to data given by the client, communication skills to complete and understand work given to me by the person I was shadowing or a manager, teamwork skills as you are working in a very team orientated environment, and organising and time management skills as you will be on more than one client at a time.
Responsibilities
Was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. Everybody I shadowed saw me complete evidence gathering activities (EGAs) in full by myself by the end of each week. These are essential for the audit and I did not think I would have been given full responsibility for such tasks so quickly after I had joined. It was extremely beneficial to do I was able to learn from them quickly.
Support & Guidance
Everyone I shadowing during my time was great. They gave me numerous opportunities to learn and it was great to see how the team worked. I spoke to numerous people within the team along including managers and loved meeting everyone. All were so welcoming and did everything they could to answer any questions I had and to get to know them.
Culture
The culture was one of work hard, learn, and enjoy the team, but also one of relax when finished. Most finished around 5/6 each night, and they were supportive of those with other commitments. For example, I had to leave early 2/3 night for football games and they were fine with that, I just gave them a couple of days notice. They were also very supportive of those doing ICAS.
Your Impressions
Extremely enjoyed the internship. Felt as if I learned a lot more than I expected which tied in a lot with knowledge I had learned at university. I was amazed at how much responsibility I was given during an internship and felt as if it only further improved the experience. Furthermore, the CoE team were brilliant (shoutout to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]) and the interns all became very good friends together,
Yes
Definitely apply. They were great to work for and are perfect to learn from. The tests are only a small part of the process and if you can do them well, then being yourself will definitely help you be successful in applying. There is always someone to help you so reach out even during the application process. They were quick to respond as well throughout the application process too.
