Overview
Supported the tax department with any work required such as research, rolling contracts forward and updating local and master files. I was able to work with people from every department including the indirect, large corporate, research and development and private business / private client teams. I was able to get involved in team meetings, business development workshops and tax specific training sessions which allowed me to gain a very clear perspective about what the tax department does.
Skills
It has helped me gain professional insight into what life in a tax department is, and has allowed me to develop my technical, digital and interpersonal skills. I didn't realise how digitally involved the tax team is, as almost every day you are required to understand and edit complicated software systems and spreadsheets. The experience has allowed me to immerse myself in the culture and understand the technical terms of my potential career prior to entering it.
Responsibilities
I was involved in client-facing work from the beginning and was trusted to take responsibility for my time management. I was given work that would directly impact the client and empowered to edit documents which had crucial information about their operations. My superiors encouraged me to communicate with 3rd parties, such as HMRC or clients, and this allowed me to gain confidence in the work that I was doing. I only think this responsibility could have been greater had I been at the firm for a period longer than 4 weeks.
Support & Guidance
I was given a buddy at the start who was there to welcome me and answer any questions I had about the experience. They were very helpful in ensuring I felt comfortable in my role and served as a confidant for any issues I had. I also was given a career coach who helped me set goals of what I wanted to achieve and outlined the expectations the firm had of me. They also helped to find work to do when I was struggling for it.
Culture
The whole tax department was very welcoming and everyone introduced themselves and offered to catch up with me in order to get to know me. I never felt anxious about asking questions as I knew they were happy to help. PwC as a whole has been very welcoming and ensured we had everything we needed to have a successful internship. There were several events and perks given to us which made me feel valued and appreciated.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed and it definitely met my expectations of the internship. The work could be slightly more exciting / busy but I understand that there is only so much they can give a 4 week intern. I think if the placement was longer then I would be more likely to get much more involved in technical work as this would take a while to learn. I would love to come back to undertake a graduate role at the company and to be able to return to such a friendly tax team would be great.
Yes
Don't be intimidated by the application process - everyone is here to help you. Try to focus on understanding the culture and values of PwC and not worry about whether or not you have the required technical knowledge as they do not expect you to. With regards to the psychometric testing, try not to overcomplicate your answers and just go by instinct. Just be yourself, relax and show how good a fit you would be.
