Overview
Work varied throughout the placement and I was able to get involved in different jobs and meetings to get an understanding on what my team were involved in and work across the business. My weeks were varied as I had many opportunities to travel across the UK to do site visits, office work, inspections, events, etc.
Skills
Completing Network Rail safety courses, Improving my Microsoft Office skills, Learning new software's, Time management, Professional communication, Adaptability, Improving note taking. You will develop your professional skills and will notice a difference from starting to finishing. A very positive experience.
Responsibilities
Yes! I had a lot of responsibility and trust throughout the placement. One of my projects was producing risk assessments that allowed me to travel to different parts of the country that I managed myself (travel, time, location). You are treated with the same respect and responsibility as a normal team member.
Support & Guidance
Everyone in my team were supportive and helpful throughout. Able to get guidance on work and I was never thrown into a job without being shown what to do and got given examples.
Culture
The office where I was located was more formal than in comparison to the other offices/DU's but still relaxed enough to feel comfortable. The company is diverse and open to everyone. Feels inclusive.
Your Impressions
Really enjoyed it! The work was varied, able to see a lot of the business. Had multiple opportunities to travel to different locations and site visits. Put in with a great team who made me feel comfortable and part of the team from day one. Time on placement goes really fast so ask a lot of questions and put yourself out there to meet as many as people as possible.
Yes
When preparing for the interview/assessments do a lot research into the company. Safety is the most important part of Network Rail and is what everyday work is trying to maintain. Read up on how Network Rail is managed and the main principles. Don't worry too much on the technicalities of the railways as it is not expected that you have the knowledge when starting.
