    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assisted with other Design engineers with helping out with their work. I was part of multiple different teams in Electrification & Plant. I learnt a huge amount from each one however I was mainly part of the Distribution team where I was able to learn about how the electrification works in the railway and how it is maintained. This was a desk role however I did get the chance to go on survey a few times.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a huge amount about teamwork, project management as well as what working in the industry is like. The teamwork and collaboration skills I have learnt have been hugely influential and ones I want to take back to my final year. I also have learnt how to properly manage a project, and this is something I will take into every group project.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes at the start I was working on many projects that weren't live, however once I started and showed my work I started working on live projects and taking more roles with responsibility. This was something I loved to be a part of and something that I wish I had longer in the role for.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 5/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I think sometimes I felt that I didn't have as much support as I could have. I think with the recent organisation changes I was put on the backburner and so my development wasn't thought about for a while.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 3/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 4/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere was very friendly and everyone was like one big family. You could speak to everyone quite easily however sometimes you just needed to be bold and brave to speak to someone especially when it is online. This is something that I wish I was more like especially at the start. It is a lovely place to work, I thought that where I worked there weren't many graduates.

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?
  • 4/5

  • How would you rate the social opportunities?
  • 3/5

  • How would you rate the diversity initiatives?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed it and I learnt a huge amount about what I want in my future role and what priorities to look for in a company. Getting used to a 9-5 was a challenge but I liked it once I got used to it and it was a definitely a role I could see myself in in like 10 years or so.

  • 7. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail
  • I think try and get a role in the central region as that is where almost all the other Year In Industry students are. There is no way of connecting with those Year In Industry students if you are not based at that office. The welcome event promised all of these meetings and collaboration between Year In INdustry students however this did not incorporate the students from other regions.
