Overview
I was sat with an Associate for two weeks in Dispute Resolution and two weeks in Derivatives and Structured Products. I completed tasks as assigned, as well as timetabled sessions by the Graduate Recruitment Team. Additionally, completed projects weekly.
Skills
I have improved lots of my existing skills like time keeping, responsibility, working in a team and networking. Through various networking conversations I have improved and developed a keen ability to come up with relevant questions and tailor the conversation appropriately.
Business Insight
It was especially useful to learn about the firm and the roles including from an insider perspective. I was able to have conversations with employees from all different levels of the firm, and ask about their day to day life and their overall careers. The timetabled sessions were incredibly vital to improving my understanding of the firm too.
Culture
Throughout my time, I discovered that although the different groups and different employees have their own culture, there is a common culture at the firm of kindness and approachability that is constantly shown and reflected. This was particularly apparent during networking events, as well as when I was in my seat. The discussions I had with various networks demonstrated to me the future looking stance of Linklaters.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed the insight, I was grateful for the length of it which allowed me to experience two different groups, which in turn meant two sets of work (each with their own challenges and expectations.) Both of my teams were incredibly friendly and welcoming, so I would be excited to return to the firm.
Yes
I would encourage others applying to make sure that they allow their personality to shine through during the process, and that if their personality aligns with the values and culture of the firm then they will know that it is the place they are supposed to be. In terms of arriving, I would give similar advice and advise them also to do their research thoroughly to make sure they have an idea of what they want out of this.
