Overview
Throughout my placement scheme, I was given various tasks by my trainee buddy, department and supervisor that commercial lawyers do on a daily basis. Some of these tasks included writing minutes from meetings, researching legislation applicable for our deals and also writing and sending contracts. I also got to attend many networking sessions with Partners, Associates and Trainees at the firm which were very useful in finding out a greater insight about the firm and the work that they do there including the culture.
Skills
I have definitely learnt new skills through taking part on the placement scheme. When it comes to my professional skills, I have definitely been able to grow my confidence not only through my work but through attending client meetings and speaking with different individuals within the firm daily. Additionally, I believe my interpersonal skills have developed significantly as well as my learning skills. I have learnt how to hone in on research tasks and strategies efficiently to ensure that I am not wasting time looking at unhelpful material. I have also learnt the significance of commercial awareness and just how much it plays a role when advising clients.
Business Insight
Throught the different talks and introductions that we had to different departments within the firm from both trainees, associates and some Partners, these sessions were crucial in developing my understanding of the firm. Additionally, through being able to talk with individuals and network, it was great to be able to hear about people's journeys within the firm as well as how the firm has supported them through all stages. It has also been great to learn that you can get involved and engaged in various ways at the firm including through their affinity groups and societies.
Culture
In all honesty, I have never been to a firm that has had a better firm culture and atmosphere than Stephenson Harwood. From the firm day, I felt welcomed and also likw I belonged at the firm just based on how friendly everyone was there. Additionally, when I sat in my seats, I was shocked at how comfortable I felt. Therefore, overall the firm's culture is excellent and extremely welcoming. Everyone I met was extremely friendly and it was clear that they also liked the firm. The firm also has a lot of extra-curricular activities that you can get involved in as well as additional training and talks.
Your Impressions
Overall, I extremely enjoyed the placement Scheme at Stephenson Harwood, and I would 100% encourage everyone who is interested to definitely apply for the Scheme. As someone who was unsure as to whether this was the career path I wanted to go down, the firm shows a genuine interest and care in you not only as a trainee but as a placement scheme student. Where possible, my departments tried to get me as involved as they could regardless of how busy they were which was really appreciated. We were also given food vouchers which helped with expenses.
Yes
To anyone applying to Stephenson Harwood, I would advise that you are genuine and honest with your interviewers from the start about your motivations for law as well as the firm. I think it is really necessary to also be transparent but also show why you feel that you would be a good fit for the firm so definitely do your research also. When you are preparing for the assessment centre, try your best to stay calm but also use your experience from the placement scheme to show just how much you know about the firm.
