Overview
My role involves preparing and sending out agendas for meetings such as the Management Committee, as well as keeping track of any actions that come out of it. I also support my manager with internal comms work (such as preparing the weekly news) and occasionally preparing presentations and any other ad hoc stuff. It can change on a day to day basis.
Skills
Throughout the year I have learnt and developed many skills. I have better time management, am better at working under pressure and am more confident with public speaking. My Microsoft office skills are also much more advanced than when I first started.
Responsibilities
I was given a good amount of responsibility right from the start, which was slightly overwhelming to begin with but I managed to grow into the role. I was expected to send out communications to the whole company, prepare presentations for the CEO, and fill out important strategic spreadsheets. This responsibility provided me with a great overview of the company.
Support & Guidance
I received a month-long handover period with the intern before me which was great, but after that I didn’t receive as much guidance as I would’ve liked. One of my managers left the company after a few months and my other manager was extremely busy, so I was often left to crack on with my work. The other interns provided good support though.
Culture
Good culture, people are bright and hard-working which inevitably rubs off on you. A lot of the placement was done from home due to Covid so hard to give more detail.
Your Impressions
Overall I’m really grateful for the opportunity it has given me, and for the invaluable lessons and skills developed. But the actual work in itself wasn’t the most enjoyable and was slightly stressful due to manager changes etc. However, Once the covid restrictions eased and we could all come back into the office I enjoyed the placement a lot more.
Yes
Be yourself. BMW value authenticity and managers want to see the real you. The application process is also a lot nicer than some other companies so try and enjoy it!
