Overview
I was based in the IPCT team at Gateley. I worked on Commercial, Intellectual Property and Data Protection law matters. I drafted a Privacy Notice for a client, as well as letters and attendance notes. I conducted a research task for the purpose of creating articles for the website. I attended the online presentations that were spread across the week. I worked in a group of 5 students on a presentation task on Responsible Business.
Skills
I had tight deadlines to meet when completing work in my department, which developed my ability to manage my time effectively and work under pressure. Working in the IPCT team and with other students on the Responsible Business presentation enhanced my communication and team-working skills. I was also able to utilise my inter-personal skills when meeting virtually with a client. I also developed my attention for detail and learnt how to draft different legal documents.
Business Insight
The placement was excellent in terms of enhancing my understanding of the business. The week began with an introduction to the business from the CEO [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and other online presentations on Gateley's strategy, culture and graduate development programme. I was able to learn more about the different practice areas I might work in on a training contract through online talks, speaking to different people in the office and networking on company socials.
Culture
There is a collaborative and supportive culture. The people are technically sound, but keen to help others at all levels develop. The friendly and down-to-earth environment creates a positive atmosphere to work in. There are various firm events and socials that take place too. The firm is ambitious for success as a business, but looks to be a force for good for its people, clients and communities, as demonstrated by its Responsible Business strategy.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the vacation scheme. I was involved and given responsbility by members of the IPCT team from the start. The work was interesting and I enjoyed working on tasks with others. I was able to develop my knowledge of different areas of the law. Through this, I learnt more about the firm's friendly and supportive culture, which exceeded my expectations. The firm is definitely somewhere I see myself working in the future.
