Overview
On a day to day basis, this role has included taking part in client meetings and compiling call notes from all individuals who contributed to the call, calling HMRC to liaise on applications for clients as well as assisting with work on PSAs. This role has been highly client based and involved interacting with many individuals both virtually and in person. Roles also included those based around admin - scheduling meetings for the most appropriate times and writing emails to other members of the team.
Skills
I have developed my skills on interacting with individuals in a professional manner. Each meeting I have introduced myself and interacted with the client as well as other members of the EY firm. I have also learnt many skills regarding tax law and developed a greater understanding on the process companies have to go through regarding moving workers abroad for a period of time. Alongside this, I have developed time management and organizational skills to a great extent.
Responsibilities
I was given a significant amount of responsibility internally, being trusted to work through a clients PSA to ensure they are paying tax where necessary and being exempt where possible. I was trusted to write up call notes and ensure that nothing important was missed of the emails sent to the clients regarding the action plan and next steps. I had a great deal of exposure to what a team members day to day life and work consists of.
Support & Guidance
I had a great deal of support and guidance. The team from the start were so welcoming and ensured I felt comfortable and supported. They were very conscious to get me involved on projects based around what I was interested in, and made sure to provide me with a variety of different work based tasks instead of just the same thing all of the time. My buddy was a great support and always responded to messages and questions.
Culture
I really enjoyed being part of the company and my team specifically. I have taken part in many social activities including team lunches and was even invited along to the company conference at the start of the internship. Socially I have also taken part in a tax wide rounders event where all of the tax teams were invited along. The general atmosphere is very welcoming and everyone is treated equally, I never felt singled out as an intern.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship to a great extent. It was an excellent opportunity to get stuck into real life work and I feel I have a clearer vision to what my career could look like in the future. It would be an honor to go back to this company and I would be really keen to work with the team I have been with again in the future. It excelled my expectations as I felt so much more welcomed then I could have imagined.
Yes
I would recommend people to just be themselves. The application process can feel intimidating as there are many steps and stages, but take it all at your own pace and try and be as relaxed as possible as this will allow your true self to come out - which is what EY want to see. For the assessment centre, ensure you have researched the companies values. Also, treat it as an opportunity to ask as many questions as you like!
