Overview
My role as an intern is to support the team members on any tasks that they have. This varied by day and consisted of tasks such as creating slide decks for both internal and client meetings that I would later attend, reviewing business cases and working with data in Excel. Overall, the tasks I was assigned were very varied and I was able to work with lots of members of the team throughout my internship.
Skills
During the internship, interns have the option to use the EY Badges system where you can access a range of learning modules. I was able to complete a badge on Data Science in Excel which I found to be particularly helpful given that I worked in Excel a lot throughout my internship. Also, I was able to attend client meetings which helped me to focus on how best to present myself in a professional setting.
Responsibilities
I feel that I was given a very reasonable amount of responsibility during my internship according to my role as an intern. Being new to the industry and the clients, I of course was not expected to contribute to client meetings but EY still allowed me to attend them as a useful learning experience. The team also assigned me projects to work on like creating slide decks that would be presented to partners and clients. Although this seems like a high-level of responsibility to have your work as an intern being presented in meetings, there are always members of the team that check your work before it is presented. EY did a great job during my internship of setting me tasks that force me to step outside of my comfort zone but at the same time, balance that with the safety net of knowing that your work will be reviewed by someone senior in the team prior to being seen by clients.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance during my internship. My team members were always happy to answer any questions I had and would set aside time to explain the background of a project prior to me beginning a task on it so that I would have a clearer understanding of why the tasks I was doing were useful. I also reached out to a few different employees in the company to ask their advice on things like professional qualifications and career progression at EY; they were always happy to offer their insights.
Culture
Everyone I met during my internship was very friendly, welcoming and happy to answer any questions I had. My team also hosted some team socials during my time there, whether that be coffee chats or team dinners, which allow you to get to know your team better. Employees also seemed very motivated to produce high quality work which was an inspiring environment to work in. Overall I found the company culture to supportive and positive.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and found that it gave me a great insight into what it would be like to work in this role full-time at EY. I enjoyed connecting with my team and completing a variety of tasks kept my days interesting and full of learning opportunities. I was also able to participate in a CSR volunteering day with other interns which was a great insight into EY's commitment to supporting charities.
Yes
I would advise networking with individuals via LinkedIn prior to applying to a role to determine whether the division you are applying to is a good fit for you. I also found during my internship that being curious and inquisitive is the best way to learn, make connections within the team and overall make the most of the internship. I'd also advise reaching out to employees if they have an interesting career path that you want to learn more about.
