Overview
Each week I was assigned to an auditing client to help out with. In my client team I was assigned individual work to carry out to contribute to the client audit- this included checking financial statements, carrying out procedural walkthroughs and documenting lots of financial data into many different spreadsheets. Aside from my client work, I also spent about 5/6 hours a week learning. 4 hours of this was towards a certificate learning programme that is carried out by Success Factors learning & accredited by the Chartered management institute. There was also EY specific learning to be carried out on topics such as money laundering prevention & email phishing awareness. You also have the oppurtunity to complete EY badges.
Skills
There are many skills I have learnt in my internship at EY: - Auditing IT skills: I have learnt how to use and shortcut excel to carry out auditing functions, this has also helped me to improve my core Excel skills and I will be able to carry thus forward into many careers in the future. -Teamwork: working on a client based team has taught me collaborative skills, as well as time management, organisation and networking to be able to work well with my team to acheive our collective goals to complete client work successfully.
Responsibilities
Yes. Before each task I was designated, a member of my client team would run through and explain the task I was to complete to me, but I was trusted to complete the actual work by myself. I was given the responsibility of ensuring that all my individual work was completed to a high standard, if I didn't understand something there were always people available for me to ask, but it was enjoyable to be able to try the task by myself first.
Support & Guidance
There was always a high level of support available to me. I had regular contact with the client team I was working with, as well as my assigned intern Buddy and Counsellor who would check up on me throughout my time at EY to ensure that I was happy, had sufficient work to carry out & to ask if I had any concerns. The Summer Internship Recruitment team were also available to email at all times if you had any questions or concerns. Mid-placement they had a call with each intern to catch up with them, hear how their experience was going and answer any questions that they may have. The Internship team were amazing and so well organized throughout the whole process you really felt as if you could reach out to them for any minor issue.
Culture
In my office, everyone was extremely friendly & sociable. Even as interns we were included in everything, from raising money for charity, breakfast with the managing partner and being invited to the office summer party, we were made to feel a part of the EY community as soon as we stepped into the office. Everyone was willing to help and answer any questions we had- at no point did it feel as if you were becoming a burden to another employee by asking for help as everyone was so welcoming and kind towards us.
Your Impressions
I loved my time at EY! I felt like I learnt so much from the experience and the people I have worked with and I would definitely accept a graduate role if offered to come back and work at EY! The people, the work, the environment were all so enjoyable- I couldn't fault my experience! Even outside of my regional office, the general summer internship activities were fun & exciting. I feel so grateful that I was able to meet and network with so many other interns from across the UK, it has been really interesting hearing about other people's experiences from across different regional offices.
Yes
My interview process when joining the EY Summer Internship Programme was slightly different to normal, I was fast-tracked onto the internship after completing the Women in Business Insight Day & so my main interview step was completing an interview call & presentation to one of the partners in my regional office. My advice to someone applying to EY would be not to worry about trying to learn or memorise the technical & practical service line specific information before or after completing your internship. You will have plenty of opportunity to learn this once you are in the programme- you should focus on networking! Build relationships with your team, other interns, managers, partners- this will be what will set you apart from the crowds and make your EY experience that much more enriching and beneficial for a future career.
