Overview
I worked with various due diligence teams during my time at EY. On a day to day basis I would attend team meetings and client calls, taking notes. I would also do technical tasks assigned to me, which were excel based. I would also complete my independent learnings - such as working towards certificates from CMI - the Chartered Management Institute. During my free time I did courses called EY badges where I chose to learn more about excel.
Skills
I learnt a lot about using excel through the work I was doing along with the EY badges courses. I also developed my soft skills through the study flex and CMI mandatory courses all interns were enrolled in - these courses included interactive lectures and reflective feedback coursework on 4 relevant topics, such as leadership and hybrid working. I also learnt a lot about the role, and what due diligence is. Shadowing and working with the team really helped me to understand the basics of the job.
Responsibilities
I was given lots of responsibility, but I didn't feel I was thrown into the deep end. I was gradually given more and more work to do. A lot of explanation was given to me about why I was doing a task, which was helpful. My work would also be checked, which was reassuring. At the same time, the team used my work in reports and my work was actually useful to them - I didn't feel like I was given tasks just so that I would be kept busy. Near the end of my internship the manager trusted me to be the only one with her on a client call to take notes - this really boosted my self confidence.
Support & Guidance
The EY internship was very well organised. Even before I started the internship, I would get daily calls from student recruitment asking if I had any questions or issues with onboarding. During the internship I had a buddy, who was an informal point of contact. She introduced me to the team and helped me to settle in. I also had a counsellor who had daily meetings with me to help me track and reflect my progress throughout the internship.
Culture
The people working at the company were really nice and welcoming. Everyone is very invested in their work and willing to go the extra mile. People do the work and work very hard because they are intellectually curious and enjoy challenges. The company itself has strong values, they actively try to promote diversity and have an inclusive atmosphere. My team was really collaborative and always ate lunch together and things. Even interns from different service lines and offices become and stay friends.
Your Impressions
I am glad I did the internship as it was a very good way to experience what it's like working for EY in the specific role you applied for. I've never worked in a big company like this, or done an internship before, so I really valued the experience. It was nice making contacts with professionals who you could ask career advice from. The internship in general gave me clarity about the what type of job I would like to do in the future.
Yes
If you are really interested in the company from doing your research, and you think the role sounds interesting, you should definitely apply for the EY internship programme. Attending the internship will give you a clear idea of whether you like the role/company. I would recommend in preparation for the application to do lots of research about the company through exploring the EY website and talking to EY employees - I got the chance to do this through Bright Network events. Also practice the NRT etc tests a lot.
