Overview
You spend each day doing a mix of talks put on by graduate recruitment and tasks given to you by your supervisor, trainee buddy or other department members. The tasks can vary but normally include research, drafting of or checking documents and contributing to the department know-how blogs.
Skills
Yes, engaging in a variety of tasks with a variety of people means you develop your communication skills, attention to detail and social skills within an office environment.
Business Insight
Good, you were given a talk about the company structure and strategy, as well as individual department talks. You were therefore given insight into what each practice group does from the perspective of trainees and associates.
Culture
Very pleasant, everyone is approachable and well humoured. There is no real face-time culture so people don't mind if you take an hour for lunch and sit outside, or if you leave when your work is done.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it, especially given how nervous I was before it. I appreciated people's honesty about their work and the culture, so I got a real insight as to whether the firm was for me.
Yes
For the interview make sure you really know about the firm and where it sits in the market (i.e. strategy, focus groups etc). For the actual scheme, make sure you get to know your fellow placement scheme students and offer to help anyone in your department (just because your supervisor is busy doesn't mean you can't find work elsewhere). Get involved in the socials.
