Overview
I was involved in helping with business development tasks such as research, preparing powerpoints, having initial calls with clients. I also attended client site which was fun. I was also involved in shadowing the analysts in their day to day tasks. I was involved in team meetings every week and took notes on the main points that were made. I also completed training courses alongside the internshsip in order to widen my knowledge on working culture.
Skills
Yes I have. I have learnt how important attention to detail is. I have also learnt the importance of teamwork within M&A and the delegation of tasks makes getting the job done easier and more efficient. I have experienced the hybrid working element of the job and I must say I much prefer coming into the office than working from home. I have learnt how to communicate well with people much more senior than me and be able to voice my opinion within meetings. I have learnt about the typical M&A process from the initial business development all the way to the sale execution.
Responsibilities
Yes I was. I was given tasks and deadlines to meet and it made me realise that the work I was doing was definitely contributing to the overall deal. The catch up meetings with my seniors enabled me to see what I had done well and what I could have done better. I was given tasks and presentations to do which really made me feel like I was part of the team, and if I ever had any questions people were always willing to answer them for me.
Support & Guidance
I have received a lot of support from people of all levels of hierarchy from the analysts to the partners. EY makes you feel like you are all as equally as important as each other and this makes you feel more comfortable around others and you feel more comfortable asking questions. The analysts really wanted to help you by sitting you down and talking you through current deals/tasks so you knew exactly what was going on.
Culture
EY is very welcoming and you don't feel as inferior as you probably think you would feel. It has a very friendly culture where everyone talks to everyone. For example, I've been for catch ups with the partners and they are more than willing to do this. The hours are not too antisocial, you still get to have a social life. There is even a good social life within EY, as people go out for drinks after work and it can be really fun.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. There were many events put on for the interns such as CSR day where we went to plant trees and help with farm maintenance. Our induction day at the Kia Oval was really fun with really nice food and drinks arranged. We also got to watch cricket. Then, throughout the internship there has been many social events on such as ping pong, 'meet the partner' talks, partner breakfasts etc. I really liked my team and the interns were all really nice.
Yes
I would say apply for something you are interested in and let the internship be an opportunity for you to figure out if this is actually something you want to do. 100% be yourself, as EY is very inclusive, the best thing to do is be yourself and you will always be accepted. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming so you don't need to be nervous (which I know is easier said than done seeing as it is one of the Big4). Take the opportunity with both hands and get involved with as many tasks/events as possible as it goes really quickly!
